Sudbury Courtyard was awarded Best Small Commercial Project at the East Midlands Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards earlier this month.
The rural building surveying team at Savills in Lichfield won the award for the conversion of Sudbury Courtyard, owned by the Sudbury Estate, which was completed in 2016. Situated in the village of Sudbury, Derbyshire, it is made up of a range of converted historic buildings consisting of a range of bespoke shops run by local business people.
The award was presented to the team in front of a packed room of 450 people at a gala dinner at Leicestershire’s Athena by football commentator, John Motson OBE.
The Sudbury Estate, which is also managed by Savills Lichfield, had an old courtyard of Grade II listed redundant and under utilised traditional buildings that it wanted to bring into productive use. It applied for planning and listed building consent to convert the courtyard into a collection of retail spaces for local businesses that would complement the village’s existing butcher, pub, post office and general shop.
The conversions were managed by Chris Batterby and his rural building surveying team at Savills Lichfield. He comments: “We are delighted to have won Best Small Commercial Project at the regional LABC Building Excellence Awards, which is testament to the time, effort and thought that went into this historic and often complicated conversion project. It was all about creating an aspirational place where people want to visit and live and the courtyard is now a thriving collection of shops with more units planned for conversion in the near future.”
The conversion, which took more than 18 months to complete, included the installation of a renewable heating system. Dating back to the 1800’s, the Estate buildings previously served a multitude of purposes, including a joiner’s shop, a foundry, the old estate office, a billiards room, a potting shed and an ambulance building which housed the village ambulance.
Savills worked with the Sudbury Estate, Mark Bettany Joinery and Neil Martin of Nspark on the project.
The LABC Building Excellence Awards are designed to celebrate first-rate construction across the UK. The project has now been shortlisted for the national LABC Building Excellence Grand Final which will take place in London on 10 November.
